I know that Carbon Dioxide is a byproduct of cellular respiration and that it is "given off" by animals. It is then used by plants for photosynthsis. One of the reasons for the increase in carbon dioxide is the decrease in plants from logging, land clearing, and home building.
I know that China is currently the largest producer of Carbon dioxide with the US a close second.
I think I read somewhere that the increase in carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide is causing the decrease in the ozone layer.
There is a lot of controversy surrounding the theory of global warming.
I have been reading about the melting of the glaciers and polar ice caps, believed to be a result of global warming. The result of this is higher ocean levels, threatening coastal cities and habitats.
I know that the global climate has changed many times throughout the geologic time span for a variety of reasons.
I think most of the efforts to reduce carbon emissions have been centered around public transportation efforts like busing and subway/light rail systems. I particularly like the idea of public bicycles that you pick up and ride to your destination and return or leave at the closest docking point. I think that the idea of paying carbon credits is a punitive system that requires an entity to "pay for credits" when they go over a certain amount, but I'm not sure.
I also know that the city of Wichita has been having smog alerts the past 2 summers. I wonder if this has anything to do with carbon dioxide, or if that is just a problem that is in addition to the EPA warnings?

  2. · Carbon dioxide is trapped in the stratosphere layer, which would be the layer up from the layer in which we live.
    · Carbon Dioxide is a colorless, odorless gas which naturally occurs in our atmosphere.
    · In addition to the carbon dioxide which is surrounding us in the atmosphere, you would think there would be a certain amount in influence by our daily actions. I am pretty sure carbon dioxide is the same formula of carbon and oxygen atoms in any instance. Pops and carbonated drinks are filled with the gas to make them fizz. In addition, it is the leavening agent in the bread I make for my family’s lunches, it is the dry ice for my Halloween science experiments, and I am pretty sure it is somehow used in fire extinguishers. More people on Earth means more food and drink, as well as probably more fires to be extinguished which would account for the photosynthesis having to work overtime essentially to keep everything in balance. Even the water we play in at the ocean and the water we drink naturally has carbon dioxide in it.
    · The federal government has set guidelines for car manufactures in which they have to set new production vehicles at certain limits for carbon emissions.
    · Researchers keep saying we have some of the highest levels of CO2 in our atmosphere now based on the last how many hundreds of years, but how do they really know that? The ice caps have shown us there are gases trapped in the ice from generations gone by but one would think that would be only since the latest thaw. If the Earth naturally goes through warm and cool spells maybe there isn't as much we can do; maybe we have to let nature, to some degree, do its part.

  3. CO2 - makes bubbles...in beverages, bread, dry ice; the gas released in respiration, transpiration and used in photosynthesis; my knowledge is limited, seems as though it has a place in our life cycles and can be both good and maybe too much is not good.

  4. I know that carbon dioxide is a major contributor in the greenhouse effect. There have been a lot of efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by the use of renewable energy. For years the auto industry has been experimenting and making cars using solar, electric, and biodegradable fuels. There has been debate on whether the human population is the source of the increase of CO2, or is it because of the natural emissions produced from photosynthesis. We are also in an interglacial period where the earth has gone between ice ages and warmer periods. So is global warming because of humans?

  5. I know carbon dioxide is related to global warming. This can change our earth's climate,

Vehicles using fossil fuels are a huge contributor to the problem of over emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Also, large industries are a big contributor to the problem.

People all over the world are going to have to change and be responsible for less pollutants that they put into the atmosphere. Some countries are ahead of others in these CO2 reductions.

  6. CO2 is produced by cars, trucks, factories.

Plants take in CO2 and release oxygen. They do this through photosynthesis. Algae is a major contributor to this.

We can reduce CO2 emissions by driving less. We can also reduce them by trying to use less power during peak times. Shutting off lights, using a clothes line, and turning down the air conditioner in the summer should contribute to a reduction in CO2 emissions.

Vehicle manufacturers are required to reduce emissions on new vehicles. This should help. But really more and more cars are on the road every year. If people made an effort to use mass transit, bike, walk or to carpool that would help a lot.
